Current state and problem
Alimpex owns large dairy warehouses, which have many other depositors, has twelve distribution points throughout the Czech Republic, a central warehouse, more than 120 trucks and approximately 500 employees. An important parameter that ALIMPEX FOOD is particularly proud of is a sophisticated logistics system that must be able to quickly and reliably serve approximately 8,000 collection points. However, it also differs from its usual competitors in that it uses electronic data interchange (EDI) to communicate with its customers, where information is transmitted in a structured and automated manner.
Just as in the exchange of documents in retail chains, EDI can also be applied in the field of logistics, where the speed and accuracy of document exchange is perhaps even more important. Logistics service providers (LSPs) play a key role here, which many suppliers to retail chains use to cover their logistics operations. They thereby reduce transportation costs and logistics departments and improve their productivity.
Proposed solution
If a trader has units of orders per day, this agenda can be managed “manually” with some effort. In this case, he orders his goods directly from the supplier. However, if the number of orders is in the tens or hundreds per day, he will start ordering from the LSP due to the disproportionate administrative burden. In such a case, without structured data interchange (EDI), communication will soon become chaotic, with poor deliveries and inaccuracies, which are associated with costs and additional administration. When exchanging documents, it is necessary to take into account all possible events and have all the processes involved resolved to avoid errors and delays.
EDI for logistics
The obvious solution for ALIMPEX FOOD was to implement structured electronic communication with its customers. The chosen solution was EDI for logistics, which is adapted to the logistics sector in every respect.
The solution is tailored to the logistics segment and covers a number of specific functions that reflect the functioning of a logistics company. Thanks to the EDI solution for logistics, Alimpex Food has accelerated and refined the exchange of information, eliminated errors, reduced administration and subsequently significantly saved time and operating costs, especially in the following logistics processes: goods receipt and storage, stock overview, inventory, handling and warehouse movements, shipping, returns and co-packing.
