XML (Extensible Markup Language)

Markup language. It belongs to the same group as HTML, but is focused on describing the structure and content of a document.

It allows easy creation of specific markup languages (so-called applications) for different purposes and different types of data. It is used for data serialization, in which it competes with JSON or YAML, for example. XML processing is supported by a number of tools and programming languages.

The language is intended primarily for data exchange between applications and for publishing documents, where it describes the structure in terms of the substantive content of individual parts, it does not deal with the appearance. The presentation of the document (appearance) can be defined using cascading styles. Another processing option is transformation into another type of document, or into another XML application.

XML can be used as an output format for an electronic document from an information system. This can then be converted to a commonly used standard using an EDI system ( ORiON EDI ) and sent to a business partner who can then automatically machine-translate it into their information system.
