Slovakia will switch to mandatory e-invoicing from 2027. For companies, this means that a PDF invoice sent by email will no longer be enough. An e-invoice will have to be in the form of a structured data message that can be processed by the accounting system, business partner and financial administration.

But what does this mean in practice and how does it differ from the regular electronic invoice that companies are used to today?

Is a PDF invoice an e-invoice?

No. PDF is an electronic document, but it is still mainly about the visual form of the invoice. A person opens it, checks it, and someone has to manually transcribe, extract or transfer the data from it to the accounting system. In mandatory e-invoicing in Slovakia and throughout the EU, the data structure is decisive , not just the fact that the invoice exists in electronic form.

What the new e-invoice looks like in practice

An e-invoice contains information about the supplier, customer, items, amounts, VAT or date of issue in a structured data format . The visual appearance of the invoice may remain the same as today, but the important thing is that it contains data that the system can read and process further.

In practice, the e-invoice will be sent directly from the ERP or invoicing system that the company already uses, or from an application offered directly by the digital postman (e.g. GRiT ). The sending will be automated without the need for manual emailing.

What format will e-invoices use in Slovakia?

In Slovakia, the use of the XML/Peppol BIS standard is planned. Therefore, the e-invoice must have the correct structure and contain the required data already when it is issued. The digital postman checks the formal correctness of the document before sending it, so that an incorrect invoice does not reach the customer or for further processing at the tax office.

What if the e-invoice has an error or fails the check?

If an e-invoice has an error, the digital postman will not allow it to be sent at all. The check takes place before delivery, so an invoice with missing data or an incorrect structure will not even reach the customer. An error message will appear in the system you will use to issue invoices.

If the error in the invoice only appears after delivery, the process remains similar to today. The company issues a correction document, which goes through the entire process again via the digital postman.
