VAN (Value Added Network)

A value-added network, i.e. a network that offers additional services in addition to its usual purpose – data transmission.

Specifically, in the case of EDI communication, it is typically a guarantee for the distribution of undistorted information to its addressee. The main task of the VAN operator is to ensure the distribution of standard shipments and messages, and the operator usually also acts as a supplier of software, i.e. converter and communication software for connection to the VAN network.

In this case, the converter and communication software still remain on the client's side, along with the associated acquisition costs and costs associated with their administration.
